Can Custom Orthotics Relieve My Foot Pain?

Oct 19, 2023

Every day, we place a huge amount of physical strain on our feet just by walking from one place to another. The stress can be even worse when we suffer from the following conditions:

  • Heel and arch pain
  • Diabetes
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sprains
  • Sports-related injuries

In fact, did you know that millions of Americans suffer from foot and ankle pain every day?

It’s true! But don’t just take our word for it, because according to the American Podiatric Medical Association:

  • 77% of American adults have experienced heel pain.
  • 50% of American adults report that foot pain has restricted their activities.
  • 78% of American adults who suffer from foot pain wear ill-fitting shoes or unsupportive footwear.

However, you shouldn’t mistake foot pain for being “normal” or “an inevitable part of life” – because this couldn’t be further from the truth! Rather, foot pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

One thing that all of these conditions have in common is that they can all be treated with custom orthotics! The purpose of inserts called custom orthotics is to help control motion irregularities caused by such conditions. As a result, these devices can evenly redistribute your body’s weight for a more comfortable walk and faster healing.

WHAT ARE CUSTOM ORTHOTICS?

Custom orthotics are versatile medical devices that are specially made for each patient. They fit the exact form and contours of their feet – something store-bought counterparts couldn’t achieve. All you have to do is slip these amazing devices into your shoes and they will actively support and cushion your feet with every step you take. It’s that simple!

These devices are often prescribed for effective:

  • Alignment of the feet.
  • Balance restoration and optimal foot positioning when standing or moving.
  • Improvement with regard to biomechanical functioning of the feet and lower legs.
  • Pressure relief from specific areas of the feet that may be causing pain or discomfort.
  • Prevention of foot deformity or the worsening of any existing conditions.

These inserts are built from durable materials (like polypropylene, a type of flexible plastic, and graphite) to provide optimal support, distribute body weight properly, and correct faulty biomechanics.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CUSTOM ORTHOTICS?

There are three types of custom orthotics: soft, semi-rigid, and rigid. All three are built with different materials and prescribed according to different foot conditions.

Soft devices are built with compressible materials. They’re intended to improve balance, absorb shock, and decrease pressure on foot sores.

Semi-rigid devices work best for athletes who have foot pain, as they correct the biomechanics so the muscles and tendons move the foot properly. They use firm-but-flexible materials to control motion and provide cushioning.

Rigid devices are made with polypropylene, carbon fiber, or other firm materials that aid in foot function. These are typically prescribed to relieve pain that results from abnormal gait mechanics and is often used in footwear that doesn’t require a lot of motion (like dress shoes).

OVER-THE-COUNTER (OTC) ORTHOTICS VS. CUSTOM ORTHOTICS

Although patients have the freedom to choose between over-the-counter (OTC) orthotics and custom orthotics, there’s a difference between the two.

OTC inserts are usually made of materials like foam or gel, which tend to only last for about a year. While these orthotics do provide support, they should only be used for providing additional cushioning or extra arch support. Relying on them for specific foot conditions might not bring the results you need.

Custom orthotics, on the other hand, are specialized for your feet. When you come to our office to get fitted for a pair of custom-made orthotics, we’ll perform a thorough evaluation of your lower limbs. This way, we can accurately determine which type of orthotics is best for your specific foot shape and condition.

HOW DO THEY ACTUALLY HELP ME?

Custom orthotics are created to relieve pain and pressure on certain areas of your foot through effective support and cushioning. They’re ideal for patients who seek relief that doesn’t involve traditional procedures, like surgeries.

You should get them when you’re looking for an effective treatment, but don’t want to go “under the knife.” Because once they’ve been custom-made, all you have to do is slip them on!
